Other Conferences and Events

The following conferences represent just a few of the professional conferences that may be of interest to the field.  This list is reviewed and updated periodically.

Dear Colleague,

Over the past year, the WASC senior college commission offered a series of assessment retreats that supported both 2-year and 4-year campuses in their efforts to become more learning-centered. Over 400 individuals from 75 institutions found these retreats a highly effective way to develop expertise in assessment of student learning, both within programs and across the campus. The response was so positive, in fact, that WASC is offering another round of retreats this coming academic year.

We are now accepting registrations for this year’s assessment retreats and invite you to send a team. We’re continuing to offer retreats for institutions and programs that are at the beginning stages of implementing assessment, but this year there’s also something new: for programs or campuses that are more advanced, there’s an intermediate-level assessment retreat that will provide an opportunity to share best practices and learn from fellow practitioners.

All of our assessment retreats sold out last year, so if you're interested in sending a team or have a project that needs focused attention, register now.

Each retreat will be led by nationally acclaimed facilitators Mary Allen and Amy Driscoll.   Retreats will run from a Thursday afternoon through Saturday noon, at $500/person or $475/ team member.

Retreat on Student Learning and Assessment, Level I

The need is more urgent than ever, as campuses are faced with continuing demands for accountability and evidence of learning results. Teams will focus on a project they define to suit their campus needs. They’ll be able to choose from a variety of plenary and break-out sessions where they can gather information and share experiences with other campuses.  They’ll also receive one-on-one mentoring, get peer feedback on their own work and – best of all – they’ll return home with an implementation plan.

September 25-27, 2008 Courtyard by Marriott, Emeryville CA
January 29-31, 2009 Waikiki Beach Resort & Spa, Honolulu, HI

Retreat on Student Learning and Assessment, Level II

Level II is designed for campuses and/or programs that have broad assessment systems in place. This retreat provides specific support for the goals of participating teams that want to take their work to the next level, with a special focus on closing the loop. Each team will be expected to share two promising ideas from its own campus experience.

Presentations, discussions, and plenary sessions will focus on issues related to team goals and may include topics such as designing tests, conducting focus groups, assessing critical thinking, assessing general education outcomes, content analysis, scoring rubrics, closing the loop, and organizing the campus infrastructure to support the culture of evidence.

Boylan, the Director of the National Center for Developmental Education and Professor of Higher Education at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC and Richard Sterling, the recently retired executive director of the National Writing Project and adjunct professor of Language and Literacy, Society and Culture at the University of California, Berkeley.
