The partnership between an accreditor and its member colleges is based on a commitment to continuous quality improvement. In order to ensure academic quality, institutional effectiveness, and student success, we must engage in authentic assessment. Exemplars of Assessment in Higher Education: Diverse Approaches to Addressing Accreditation Standards, is a new book published by the Association for the Assessment of Learning in Higher Education (AALHE), and edited by Jane Marie Souza and Tara A. Rose. 24 institutions of higher education are included to highlight a variety of assessment topics and to provide models of effective and authentic assessment for others.

Two ACCJC member institutions are featured in the book! Chapter One, The Evolving Measure of Learning, was written by Bill Moseley and Sonya Christian of Bakersfield College. Chapter 18, Transforming from Within: Strategic Planning as a Tool for Institutional Reflection, Direction, and Transformation, was written by R. Ray D. Somera and Marlena Montague of Guam Community College.

“In a time when higher education professionals must step up their efforts to assess teaching and learning in order to improve outcomes for all students, this book provides exemplars in the field of assessment from colleges and universities who represent diverse missions and student populations. Recommended by their respective accreditor, the institutions highlighted in this book provide the reader a wealth of information about effective assessment structures and practices that can be molded to fit a variety of educational cultures and environments.”
